This is the email i just sent to my psychology professor. I can't believe I have to do this. But, I'm putting it here as a vent for the complete rage I just carried out of that room.
Hi Monica,
I just left class early. I apologize for walking out so rudely, but I'm afraid that I just can't sit there and continue to be so offended and oppressed by this subject matter. In our discussions of the difference between men and women, I feel that we are looking strictly at a straight, white, male, middle-class perspective. I am feeling more and more like my people are invisible every day. My butch girlfriend, my butch mother. All butch lesbians in the entire universe. All queers, all working-class women. Hell, all women.
Yes, it is true that there are biological differences between the sexes. But most of the differences that are discussed in Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus stem from misogyny in all societies. Many stem from religious beliefs, adherence to biblical points of view that women are worthless. The idea that women are looking only for mates that can protect and provide is, I think, the most offensive thing I have ever heard at this school. The concept that male channel-surfing is a reflection of the natural need for the hunt is downright disgusting.
It is beyond frustrating that people talk over you, and I imagine that, at times, you feel quite invisible for that reason. I honestly don't know what to do. To tell you the truth, I would drop this course if it would not cost me my financial aid. I am coming to you with this before turning anywhere else. The fight against sexism in acadamia was fought, and won, in the 1980's and 90's, and I think that with material like Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, we are stepping backward.
Thank you for reading this, and I do hope we can work something out. I am not the type of student to walk out of classes, but I am most definitely not the type of person who pays to be offended on a daily basis.
Thanks,
Charly
