Art advice

Hi friends.
So, this painting thing is kinda new to me. And I've been painting these little animals on scraps of wood. I want to protect them, so I got some clear spray paint to top-coat them.
Except the spray paint is glossy, and I really like that they have a matte finish right now.

Do you know of anything I can top-coat them with that is matte?

Thanks!

You can buy matte finish sealant at art supply stores. At craft stores that sell tole painting supplies (i.e. things for mom crafts) you'll be able to buy matte sealant for sure. It's often available in a water-based brush-on version. I only recommend the spray stuff if the brush-on won't work cause of solvent incompatibilities. (i.e. water based paints need a solvent-based coating or they melt like runny watercolour. If you used something solvent based to make the art (such as a sharpie or nailpolish) then I recommend using a water-based finishing spray so the paint underneath doesn't melt.)

ps: you can also use aerosol hairspray if you're in a pinch. I believe it's usually alcohol based. It's good for sealing dusty mediums like pastels. But if you're going to go out and actually buy something you may as well buy the real stuff.

this might not work as well. but i use a matte modge podge for making collage type things, and it also works well as a sealant. it's wetter than a spray, but since it can also be used as a glue, i like it. it wouldn't work well for things that would get messed up with a wet layer, but for over paint it should be great.

and - not as well as resin products - but modge podge works well as a layering medium, if that is the right word.

as it turns out, i don't know how to talk craft. -lexi

mod podge is great. i love having it around cuz it's a glue, top coat, good for collages, and matte. it's multi purpose. but, i would defer this answer to caro... xox
